(3rd grade Service Project)
This year we decided to introduce a fun, new service project for our 3rd grade students! One of our missions as Catholics is to serve others in our community. The ‘Birthday Box’ is a way your child can contribute to others on a level he/she can relate to. This simple project will provide the students an opportunity to GIVE on their birthday as well as RECEIVE. It also allows them to offer the gift of a ‘birthday’ to a child in need around the same age as them.
Each box will be delivered by one of the teachers to a St. Vincent DePaul Chapter in the area. The box will then be presented to or available for a child who may be visiting a food kitchen. He or she will then have the opportunity to partake in a birthday party, when they may not have that chance otherwise.
The ‘Birthday Box’ is a small (shoe-box sized) bin, filled with items that enable a child to celebrate their birthday who may not otherwise be able to take part in the celebration. It is preferred that the box be clear plastic and should include the following:
Cake mix (preferable the kind that only needs water for the mix), frosting, napkins, forks, candles, plates and a party favor that can be boy or girl related. You may also like to add balloons, invitations and any other small treasure that will fit into the box.
Everything for your “Birthday Box” needs to fit inside the box with the lid in tact. All items can be found inexpensively at the Dollar Tree (even the plastic bin!). If your child does not have a birthday during the school year, we welcome them to create a box on the day they choose to celebrate their birthday. As for September birthdays, please bring in the box as soon as you are able to create on. The last part of the “Birthday Box” is adding a handmade card for the child who will receive the box.
We are very excited about this wonderful idea and how much joy it will bring to a child and their family.
